What makes Markham different from the rest of York Region?
The direction people travel. Most of this region is residential and empties southward in the morning. Markham has a large corporate and technology employment base along the 404 and Highway 7, so a substantial number of people come here to work instead. That gives it a daytime population its neighbours do not have, and it means the morning trip in runs against the traffic rather than with it.
Does that change what my patient book looks like?
Usually, yes. Practices near the employment corridors see more patients who work in Markham and live elsewhere, which pushes demand into lunch hours and the block straight after five, and makes a mid-morning Tuesday slot harder to fill than the calendar suggests. Practices out in the residential east of the city look much more like a normal suburban book.
How far will a professional realistically travel to Markham?
Further than they would travel south, because the trip is faster in this direction at the hours that matter. Somebody in Scarborough or North York can reach a Markham practice for an eight o'clock start more comfortably than they could reach downtown. What catches people out is the crosswise trip from Vaughan or Richmond Hill, which is short on a map and slow in reality, because the roads here run north to south.
Is transit any use for getting staff here?
Not much on its own. There is no subway in Markham, and the GO Stouffville line is peak-direction, so it suits somebody travelling south in the morning rather than somebody arriving. Almost everyone drives, parking is free at the overwhelming majority of practices, and both of those are worth putting in a posting.
Can we ask for a specific language?
Yes, and in Markham it is one of the more common requests we get. Mandarin and Cantonese come up most often, and for a recall appointment or a treatment plan conversation that is a clinical matter rather than a nicety. Ask for it directly in the posting rather than hoping, the same way you would ask for a particular software.
