The one part of the 905 where the train works
Everywhere else we staff in the GTA, transit is a footnote and the real question is parking. Durham is a chain of cities along a single rail corridor with service all day in both directions, not a peak-hour run at downtown, and that changes who you can hire.
A professional without a car is realistically employable here. That is not true in York, it is not true in Peel, and almost nobody in this region puts it in a posting.

Five along the lakeshore and three rural townships above them. The order is the argument: each one behaves a little less like the GTA than the one before it.

We staff Ajax, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog, Brock as well. Ajax is a large market and will get a page of its own; the rest are genuinely thinner than the lakeshore cities and we would rather say so. Clarington is where the built-up region gives out, Uxbridge staffs from Stouffville rather than the 401, and Scugog and Brock are country towns with country pools. Notice does more for you in all four than a wider search does.

Pickering can fill on short notice off a pool it shares with Scarborough. Past Oshawa, the same shift needs more warning.

The one region you can work without a car
All-day service in both directions along the lakeshore. Set your radius around the stations and there is real work inside it.
Four cities in a row
Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa sit within a short run of each other. A modest radius here reaches more practices than the map suggests.
Going east is worth more
The pool thins toward Clarington, so a professional willing to work the eastern end sees shifts that other people are declining.
One tax form, however many practices
Every shift runs through WORKFORCE, so a year across Oshawa, Whitby and Toronto lands on a single T4.
Durham Region staffing questions
What is different about staffing in Durham?
The train, which is not a sentence you can write about anywhere else in the 905. Durham is a chain of cities along one rail corridor with all-day service in both directions, rather than a peak-only line pointed at downtown. That makes a professional without a car genuinely employable here, and it makes being near a station the single most useful thing you can put in a posting.
How is that different from York Region?
York's line runs peak-direction on weekdays, so it suits somebody travelling downtown in the morning and is little help to somebody arriving at your practice for a nine o'clock start. Durham's runs all day, both ways. Same agency, completely different tool. It is why a York posting should lead with parking and a Durham posting near a station should lead with the station.
Does the pool really thin out going east?
Yes, and we would rather say so plainly. Pickering and Ajax at the western end share a good deal of their pool with Scarborough, and by the time you are past Oshawa you are recruiting from a genuinely smaller local market. That does not mean we cannot cover it. It means notice matters more the further east you are, and a professional who already lives out there is worth more to you than a wider search.
Do you cover Clarington and the northern townships?
Yes, across Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock, and honestly those are thinner markets than the lakeshore cities. Uxbridge in particular staffs from a different direction than the rest of the region, because it is closer to Stouffville than to the 401. More notice, and a preference for local hires, does more good out there than anything else.
Is Durham just a commuter belt for Toronto?
Less than the label suggests. Oshawa is a real city with its own downtown, hospital and campuses rather than a bedroom suburb, and it retains a workforce instead of only exporting one. That gives the eastern end of the region a local pool that the western end, which genuinely does commute, has less of.
I do not drive. Can I get work here?
This is the best region in the GTA to ask that. The all-day service along the lakeshore means a shift within a walk of a station is realistically claimable, in both directions, at the hours practices actually open. Tell us you are working by transit and we will only show you what genuinely fits.
